With the help of a Solar Pathfinder, you can quickly identify the best location to install your solar panel. Experts agree that solar panels ought to experience unobstructed sunshine from 9am to 3pm (at least) so they can produce reasonable amounts of electricity. This can be achieved by making sure the spot you choose experience little or no shading during this crucial period.

A Solar Pathfinder

The Solar Pathfinder is a standard shade analysis tool. You can use it to find out exactly where the shadows will be at particular times of the day or year. The data is in graphical form, so you can make sense of it at one glance.

Another popular tool is the Solmetric Suneye. This instrument is rather user friendly, but is much more expensive than the Solar Pathfinder. This will set you back by at least $1,500…yet there is a cheaper option.

Why Do We Need To Use A Solar Pathfinder?

A proper instrument like a Solar Pathfinder can save you lots of time and guesswork. Moreover it is reasonably easy to use and is affordable.

If we do not have any instrument to predict shadow positions, we’ll have to sit up from dawn to dusk to observe how they move. This is a waste of time! Moreover, these positions shift (slightly) through different seasons because of how the earth rotates around the sun.

But why do we care so much about the extent of shading? You may not realize this, but the effect of shading is devastating to solar energy production. Even if your solar panel is slightly covered under a shadow, the power output can drop drastically.

Consider this…if you shade only one solar cell out of the entire solar panel, your energy production is likely to drop by a third. If you shade a row of photovoltaic cells, your electricity output reduces by about 90%. This means your solar panels have virtually stopped working!

Therefore when installing your solar panels, shading is your first and most important concern.

But is it worthwhile to use a solar pathfinder? Perhaps we should ask ourselves if we could determine shadow positions without the use of a scientific instrument… In fact, the additional electricity you’ll be able to generate quickly covers the cost of the Solar Pathfinder. This is especially true for larger systems.

After all, you’ve invested money and effort on your solar cells, batteries and inverters… Are you going to sacrifice a potentially significant part of its energy output just to save a few bucks? I hope not!

In case you are thinking of installing solar panels without a Solar Pathfinder, drop the idea as soon as possible. Because guesswork will eventually cost you dearly! You may be concerned about the cost…or you may be worried about the complexity of the instrument. The fact is this instrument only costs $249 and you’ll probably take only 15 minutes to learn how to use it.

Whatever it is, if you’re without a Solar Pathfinder, I’m confident of this — you cannot even begin your installation… Without this instrument, you’ll be lost!

To use a Solar Pathfinder, you simply have to bring it to the spot you feel is most suitable for installation. Then you’ll need to level the instrument and point it to the right direction with the help of an in-built compass. The plastic dome will show you a paranomic view of the entire area together with the regions affected by shading over different times of the day or year.

To record your readings, you can use a wax pencil (or grease pen) to outline the shadow or simply use your digital camera to take a snap shot. (I prefer the second approach – it’s instantaneous!)

The effects of shading are exceedingly damaging to solar energy production. Therefore you need to eliminate the guesswork — which can end up costing you a lot — and adopt a scientific approach to install your solar panels. Among all known techniques, the easiest and cheapest way is to use a Solar Pathfinder.

Have you ever wondered if solar panels are suitable for your property? If you have, here’s the answer: Any location where there is sufficient sunshine is ideal for installing PV panels.

In general, climate has a direct influence on sunlight intensity. Different conditions (as listed below) may restrict or permit the use of solar panels on your property:

1. Sunlight.

The southwest part of the U.S. gets the most sun while the northern states (and Canada) gets the least.

Obviously if your area doesn’t have enough sunshine, it won’t be cost-effective to install solar panels. But how much is enough?

Studies show that the amount of sunlight we experience across the United States is more or less within 20% of the sunshine level in Florida. This makes it possible for most households to have solar panels on their roofs.

Occassionally, there may be shade issues at specific locations, but this can be solved in one way or another.

Generally, the more sun your home experience, the better (and faster) return you’ll have on your investment. You can get data about the sunshine your area experiences from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). They recorded sunlight data on 239 locations all across the United States:

http://rredc.nrel.gov/solar/pubs/redbook/

2. Cloud

If you are living in a cloudy region, it is still possible to use solar panels. This is because solar energy is present although it’s diffused. Surprisingly, there is an advantage to this. The orientation of your solar panels becomes less important since light is coming from different directions.

3. Snowfall

Snow covers your PV panels and weighs them down. Some parts of your property may accumulate more snow than others. This may be because some spots are warmer than others. You will want to locate your solar panels where there is least snow accumulation.

4. Fog

Pollutants, fog and smog in the air affect sunlight intensity. If this is an obvious concern, you (or your contractor) should measure the sunlight intensity at your area to determine if you can get enough solar energy on a long-term basis.

5. Temperature

PV panels are affected by temperature. The lower the temperature, the better its performance. You can generally get more power output from a cold, cloudy day than a hot sunny day.

6. Air Density

Air density affects the amount of sunshine you receive. However its effect is marginal compared to the other factors. If you live on the mountains where air is thinner, you receive more sunshine. The air temperature may also be lower. Thus your PV panels will likely be more effective than when it’s installed at sea level.

7. Wind

Strong winds can damage your solar panel installation by tearing it from its mounts. But this, by itself, should not deter you from using solar panels.

To handle strong wind, you can either (i) use stronger mounts for your solar panels, (ii) use vegetation to block the wind, or (iii) use wind turbines to dissipate its force and to generate more electricity.

Some wind is actually good for solar panels. It helps to cool them down by bringing heat away. This helps to enhance its efficiency.

It is 100% possible to build those homemade solar panels you see in books or on the Internet. However this may not be the best direction for everyone. Honestly.

So how do you know if building a do-it-yourself solar panel is the right thing for you?

There are a few guidelines that can help you along. In this way, you won’t ever have to get into a project just to abandon it mid-stream.

You should build your own DIY solar panel if:

1. You are able to work with simple tools and have a weekend to spare

Thankfully, all it takes to build a reasonably sized solar panel are simple tools and a weekend. If you have browsed through the free book titled “How To Build A Solar Panel”, you’ll understand it doesn’t take much. (Download it now, if you haven’t…)

This assumes you have already gathered all your materials and have them cut to size. In fact, if you already had some DIY experience, you can even build a solar panel (not the complete set to power your entire home) in an afternoon.

However do note that integrating your inverter and the battery bank into your power system certainly requires planning and installation. And this takes up time as well.

2. You are not willing to invest much into a solar power generator

Cost is the main reason people build their own solar panels. This is understandable. You can easily burn at least $20,000 (depending on the size of your house) to install a solar energy generator. And things are not getting any cheaper…

With homemade solar panels, you’ll only have to part with a fraction of this cost. This means you’ll get your returns on investment sooner. And your home may be worth a lot more than it originally was without spending a ton of money. In some states, you can receive tax breaks just by using renewable energy like solar power.

In terms of dollars and cents, it certainly makes sense to build your own photovoltaic panels.

Of course, there is no point in starting a DIY project if you simply have no time or are totally uninterested in picking up even a screwdriver to put the solar panel frame together.

Needless to say, if you have spare cash (to the tune of $20,000) to burn, it can be quite fun to watch the contractors climb onto your roof to slap on a few pieces of solar panels while you sit at your garden with a can of beer in your hand.

Seriously, you have to take some time to decide for yourself if building homemade solar panels is for you. Otherwise you can start a DIY solar panel project and leave it uncompleted, shelving it for years in your garage.

BNB Renewable Energy Holdings and Enfinity America Corporation plans to work together on a part of BNB’s distributed generation (DG) pipeline. Several projects are expected from this partnership and the first of these is the 9.8 megawatt solar project that is to be built on a 60 acre land at Campbell Soup Company’s production facility in Napoleon, Ohio.

The solar panels will be ground mounted and is the largest commercial solar array currently under development in the United States of America. By the end of this year, all the solar panels will be completely installed and will start producing power.

As agreed, Enfinity America Corporation will handle the financing of the project and co-manage the system and operations with BNB.

Campbell will purchase all the power generated by the Napoleon, Ohio system. This can satisfy about 15 percent of the plant’s annual electricity needs. With this, about a quarter million tons of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions can be eliminated. This will indeed create a positive impact to the environment.

SunPower (San Jose, Calif.) was called upon to deliver the technology, procurement, and construction work for the Napoleon solar energy plant. The SunPower® [Oasis®] Tracker system will be installed.

This project is likely to create more than 200 jobs in Ohio this summer. During the first year of operation, this solar power plant can generate more than 14.7 million kilowatt hours.

“This opportunity to collaborate with Enfinity marks a great milestone in the development of BNB’s potential DG projects and ensures a successful completion and financing of the Campbell project”, said Matthew Baird, a principal and founder of BNB Renewable Energy Holdings, “The construction of this facility marks a turning point towards larger on-site renewable generation in the USA; We look forward to developing additional projects for environmentally conscious companies like Campbell.”

Rafael Dobrzynski, Enfinity’s Americas CEO, commented “Partnering with BNB means that a range of synergies and complementary skill sets have been used to bring this project to fruition. Our involvement with the Napoleon Solar project validates Enfinity’s strategy of focusing on large-scale DG installations; moreover, our deep experience with this type of solar project and ability to rapidly deploy capital means we can accelerate the pace of development and implementation. DG projects have continued to be an important part of our USA project pipeline.”
The partnership between BNB and Enfinity was established by Bostonia Partners (Boston), a financial advisor to BNB that specializes in renewable energy finance.

There are obviously costs involved in setting up residential solar panels. Today, we’re going to look at these and balance them up with the financial gains you’ll experience. It’s a busy day, so let’s get right in:

Cost #1: Equipment.

Equipment forms the largest part of the entire solar power setup. These are PV panels, inverters, battery bank, regulators, et cetera. Equipment cost can be spread out over time if you want to expand your solar power generator over time. Perhaps your goal is to be able to build up one more solar panel every weekend. Thus your cost really spreads out over time. It can really be less taxing on your wallet this way.

Cost #2: Installation

If you want to do the installation yourself, you won’t have to worry about this cost. But if you want to get a professional or contractor to do it for you, remember o budget for this as well.

Cost #3: Interest

If you took up a loan to pay for your PV panels and other photovoltaic components, the interest is going to build up and this must be factored into the overall cost as well.

Cost #4: Permits, Fees and Taxes

In some locations, you’ll need to pay for permits and fees when you install solar panels over your roof or on your property. Generally, most states let you install solar panels without imposing taxes on them. But be sure to check with your local authorities so you know if you need to pay for any taxes.

Cost #5: Clearing Refuse

If you need someone to clear out any refuse for you, you may need to pay for their service.

Now these are all costs…how about the benefits, I hear you ask. Well, here are the financial gains you’ll enjoy:

Benefit #1: Lower Energy Bills

The most obvious benefit is the reduced (or eliminated) electricity bills. If you are adding solar panels gradually to your collection of “solar harvesters”, your energy bills will gradually reduce and may finally be eliminated.

Benefit #2: Hedge Against The Rising Cost of Energy

The cost of energy is set to rise as inflation and scarcity forces its price upward over the long term. We all experience this effect — everything seems to get more expensive! Yet when you’re tapping energy from the sun, it doesn’t get more expensive then when you first bought the photovoltaic equipment. Therefore while the rest of the world pays for electricity through their nose, you can quietly enjoy cheap electricity using solar panels.

Benefit #3: Appreciation

The price of your property will probably appreciate because you installed an asset. Depending on the valuation, you may get back what you paid for. This mean you’re really using all the energy for free through the years. If you built your own residential solar panels, you’re definitely going to get back more than you invested in equipment and other photovoltaic components.

Let’s take a look at Synchronous Solar Panel Inverters…

2. Synchronous Solar Panel Inverters

Synchronous solar panel inverters are also called Grid-Tie Inverters. If you want to have a grid-tied solar power generator, a synchronous solar power inverter will suit you well.

This type of inverter takes the electricity generated by your solar generator and feeds it to the distribution panel in your home. The power is either used by the appliances at home or flows out to the utility grid. If you generate excess power, you are able to sell the energy to your utility company at the rate you’re charged.

When there is no solar energy available during cloudy days (and at night), the system seamlessly taps into the grid supply to make up the difference in power.

As such, you are able to use energy from the grid or from the photovoltaic panels. With this design, you will not need to worry about an increase in energy consumption. In case the solar panel system you design is a little too small, you can use the grid power to supplement your consumption.

Next, let’s go see what a Multifunction Solar Panel Inverter can do for us…

Solar power is touted to be the next biggest solution to mankind’s energy problems.

As we know, there is a huge amount of environmental concerns when we use fossil fuel to generate electricity.

There are carbon emissions, nuclear waste and coal slurries that become toxic lakes, just to name a few.

As a country, we rely heavily on coal. When we use coal, we cause humans (especially miners) to come into contact with carcinogenic elements. This is because toxic heavy metals are found in coal. These can be released into our environment.

Some examples of harmful elements include arsenic, selenium, cadmium, mercury, chromium, boron, and nickel.

Fossil fuel is also limited in supply. This drives up the price of energy. Whenever the price of oil and natural gas rise considerably, the United States relies heavily on coal to reduce expenditure.

Naturally, people will be concerned when presented with such facts. But there is nothing much they can do other than voicing their opinions.

Fortunately humans also discovered photovoltaics, a technology used to produce electricity from sunlight.

As solar panels become more and more effective, they become a sustainable solution to a desperate world with insatiable energy needs.

Using solar power, we can all play a part to save the environment. We can help the country become less dependent on outside energy sources. We can save money.

Comparing all the energy sources available to mankind today, solar power holds the greatest promise for solving many of our energy issues.

The sun gives out a huge amount of energy every single day. Only very small proportions of its energy reach the earth. Yet this is sufficient to supply the whole world with energy 35,000 times over at any given moment.

This means if we can tap into just 0.003 percent of the solar radiation we receive on earth, we can solve the world’s energy struggle. (And also solve many political strives caused by conflicting energy interests.)

Solar energy can certainly play an important role in your family. When you install photovoltaic panels (also known as solar panels) on your property, you can enjoy many benefits:

a.	You can save money on your monthly energy bills
b.	Your property increases in value
c.	You solar panels will eventually pay for themselves in the form of monthly energy savings, thus you’ll essentially own those solar panels for free.

In many places where it’s too expensive to run electrical cables, solar electricity becomes the cheapest form of electricity you can have.

Discover more about solar energy. You will be amazed how it can change your life in many ways.

Solar panels and solar waters heaters work well together. Just by installing such equipment, you are able to lower your utility bills by a huge percentage. You’ll also be helping the environment in meaningful ways.

While you are working on your solar panels or solar heaters, you can also explore other small projects that can make your house a better place to live in.

Here are some projects that take you less than a day to implement. And many of them are very helpful in lowering your energy bills as well.

Most of them do not cost more than $100+, so if you have a little time and a little cash, you can begin right away:

1. Install solar screens

Solar screens help to keep your house cool during summer. It prevents heat from coming into your house through the windows. As such, your air-conditioners will not need to work as hard.

Most solar screens are quite affordable. The best ones are those with a metallic, reflective surface. They reflect radiation away instead of absorbing it. They are also pretty durable.

2. Solar ventilators

Ventilators can be installed at your attic, powered by solar energy. During summer, you can activate these fans to pump the heat out of your interior. This alone can cool your house considerably.

All you need is a small fan, a small vent that comes with a cover and a small solar panel. You don’t even need rechargeable batteries. It stops working when it becomes dark, but you won’t need it at night.

Try it.

When the weather gets colder, remember to cover them properly so heat doesn’t escape through these vents.

3. Solar powered air circulation

When you heat up your house, warm air rises to the top. They are all trapped at the ceiling or attic. Heat is not distributed evenly. You can install a ceiling fan to push the heat down, or use solar power to pump warm air down to ground level.

The effect: Your home warms us faster and you’ll feel more comfortable.

For this project, you’ll need a small solar panel, a set of rechargeable batteries, a long pipe and a small exhaust fan.

4. Landscaping

Planting trees, scrubs and bushes around your house can give you many benefits. You will not only create a beautiful and rejuvenating environment… You can prevent bitter cold winds from blowing against your house in winter and shelter your house from strong sunshine during summer.

5. Install solar light tubes

Solar light tubes allow natural light to enter your house while keeping the heat and precipitation out. They cost a little more. But you can experience the benefits of full spectrum lighting in your room without expensive illumination technology.

Solar backpacks are equipped with flexible thin-film solar panels that can charge your gadgets while you are on the go. Some solar powered backpacks also come with their own battery packs and a mini charge controller.

Solar panels sewn on backpacks can convert solar energy into electrical energy. Electricity is then stored in a battery pack through a charge controller. A charge controller is essentially a power regulator that conditions the electricity that goes into the batteries for charging. This helps to prolong the life of the battery pack and prevents damage from over-charging.

When you plug your gadgets (like iPhones, MP3, iPads, et cetera) into the charger, energy from the battery packs are released to your gadget. This offers you a whole new level of convenience, especially if you are a heavy gadget user. In case you run out of power, you have the assurance that your gadget will continue working when you reach your destination.

However solar backpacks are not cheap. Thus even though many people want to own them, they are eventually put off by the price. By incorporating a set of thin-film solar panels on a backpack, the product will cost at least $80 to $120 more.

If you are good with craft work, you can easily make your own solar backpack for everyday use. All you need is a durable backpack, a flexible solar panel, a charge controller, plugs, wires and an LED bulb.

First, you have to cut a small hole for the PV panel wires to go through. Then you can attach the flexible solar panel to the fabric of your backpack and make sure its sides are total sealed so water cannot seep in. You can use epoxy or any other suitable waterproof adhesive to do this.

Once you are done with the PV panels, solder your battery pack and charge controller together. Then put them into a waterproof pouch. This helps to protect them from spills. The waterproof pouch should be attached to the inside of your solar backpack at a location near to the PV panel’s wire.

After this, you can proceed to solder all the connections together. The small LED lamp can be attached to the plug so you can find it easily even if it’s dark inside the backpack. After that, you must wrap all exposed joints with a heat shrink or duct tape to prevent short-circuits.

Put everything inside the waterproof pouch, leaving only the connector and the LED sticking out. Then carefully put some silicone glue to seal its opening. Once the silicone glue is totally dry, you can start using your DIY solar backpack.

Solar panel installation may be a daunting task for most people — it requires you to know where and how to site your solar panels. Moreover installation on roofs exposes you to the danger of falling. You are also at risk of electrocution while wiring your inverters.

But we do not have to be discouraged. Knowing what to do can help us tremendously and keep us away from danger. Some important installation know-how can make your job much safer and easier. Here are some points to consider before you install your solar panel…

In the northern hemisphere, we’d like our solar panels to tilt towards to south so that it can receive the most sunlight throughout the year. If we have a south-facing roof, all we need to do is line the solar panels along the surface of the roof. Otherwise we’ll need additional brackets to tilt the photovoltaic panels toward the south.

The roof is usually the best place to site your solar panels, but there are exceptions. Therefore you have to do a thorough survey to know where is the best place to locate your panels.

During the survey, you’ll have to take into consideration shading from plants and nearby structures. Shading has an adverse effect on solar energy production. The amount of electricity generated by photovoltaic cells reduces by a significant percentage with slight shading.

Through different seasons of the year, the position of the sun changes. So you’ll have to take this into consideration. An easy way to find the location that receives the most sunlight throughout the year is to use a Solar Pathfinder. This instrument shows you at a glance where shadows will be at different times of the day and different seasons of the year.

If the ideal location is on your rooftop, you’ll have to find out the maximum loading your roof can withstand. If the solar panels are too heavy, you will need to provide additional reinforcement to the roof structure before installation.

After the location is finalized, actual work can begin. You’ll have to get the correct solar panel mount to fix them at the ideal place — there are pole mounts, roof-ground mounts and flush mounts.

When installing on roofs, we frequently use flush mounts. This is the cheapest and easiest way to mount small solar panels. These are metal brackets that support both ends of a solar panel. It elevates the solar panels a few inches away from the roof to form a gap in between. This allows air to flow through, cooling the solar panels. It is vital to moderate the solar panel temperature so as to maintain the efficiency of photovoltaic cells.

Roof-ground mounts are grid-like structures that are used primarily for large solar panels. They can be installed on the ground or on roofs. A pole mount is used mainly for supporting a small, single solar panel.

After the solar panels are fixed, you’ll have to run and connect the electrical cables. The actual connections depend on whether you want a grid-tied or off-grid system.

With proper solar panel installation, each panel will be able to withstand strong winds and work efficiently for decades. You can also expect your property to increase in value with a solar energy system installed.
